National champions Kishane Thompson and Tina Clayton head the list of 13 Jamaicans set to compete at the Prefontaine Classic Wanda Diamond League on Saturday in Eugene, Oregon.
Organisers of the Prefontaine Classic have pulled out all the stops in ensuring that the 50th edition of the Wanda Diamond League meeting will be one of the best ever, with some of the best athletes and some mouth-watering clashes.
The entry lists feature 17 individual Olympic champions and full podium rematches in five disciplines: the women’s 100m, men’s 400m, women’s 1500m, women’s 3000m steeplechase and women’s long jump.
And every single field features at least one reigning global champion, but Jamaican eyes will be focussed on the 100m sprints involving Thompson and Clayton.
The 2024 Olympic silver medallist Thompson will line up against American speedsters Trayvon Bromell and Christian Coleman, South Africa’s rising teenage star Bayanda Walaza, Zharnel Hughes and fellow Jamaican Ackeem Blake.
Thompson, the world leader with 9.75, will be severely tested by Bromell, who has a 9.84 clocking this season but should prove too hot for the American.
Meanwhile, Tina Clayton, with a personal best of 10.81, will have an idea of where she stands in women’s world sprinting, going up against Olympic champion Julian Alfred of St Lucia and World champion Sha’Carri Richardson of the United States.
The race is a loaded one, what with the likes of Melissa Jefferson-Wooden of the US with a world-leading time of 10.73, veteran Marie Josee Ta-Lou-Smith, Dina Asher-Smith, Twanisha Terry and Ofili Favour.
The other Jamaicans set to compete are Bryan Levell in the men’s 200m, Olympic bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell in the shot put, Dejanae Oakley in the 400m, Malik James-King and Assinie Wilson in the men’s 400 hurdles, Ackera Nugent and Danielle Williams in the women’s 100 hurdles and Ackelia Smith in the women’s long jump.
The men’s discus is a late addition to the programme and will see Jamaica’s Olympic discus champion Roje Stona and the emerging Ralford Mullings in the discus alongside world record holder Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania.
