The government-controlled KoolFM radio station is to be relocated to the head office of the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ), at 5 – 9 South Odeon Avenue, Kingston 10.
Relocation of KoolFM from 1 Braemar Avenue, Kingston 5, has been on the table for years, but Information Minister Robert Morgan advised Parliament yesterday that the relocation will definitely happen by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2024.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) is to be signed between the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and AEROTEL Limited to facilitate the transfer of Kool97FM for the consolidation of government communications.
“One of the major components of a consolidation of government communications is the fast-tracking of the transfer of Kool FM. Details are being worked out, as an MOU is to be signed between AEROTEL and the Office of the Prime Minister as we ensure the proper and transparent transfer of assets and people,” Morgan said.
KoolFM was originally AEROTEL, which got a licence in 1999 to broadcast flight information. with the licence upgraded to commercial broadcasting operation and in November 2001, the station was rebranded KoolFM.
Morgan told the House of Representatives that the details are being worked out as it regards the transfer of the staff, assets and accounts of the station.
He disclosed that work is now being carried out on renovating space at the PBCJ and acquiring equipment to retool and modernise KoolFM.
