The Ministry of Labour and Social Security will meet with members of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and their union representative today (April 11) to discuss issues affecting staff members that led to a strike at the end of March.

Bus drivers of the Government-owned transport service walked off the job on March 29, leaving multiple commuters, inclusive of children, stranded at bustops.

The workers had taken industrial action after the Salary Advance paid to them in December 2022 was taken away without their knowledge or consent.

Less than 24 hours after the strike had commenced, the labour ministry met with the management of JUTC and the union representing workers, the University and Allied Workers’ Union. An agreement was made to have the funds returned and drivers resumed their post on March 30 at 7pm.

The labour ministry then promised to have further negotiations with the staff members and their union representative, which are expected to take place later today.
