Lamara Distin breaks national outdoor long jump record

Lamara Distin delivered a personal best 1.96m to win the high jump in her outdoor season opener during the Texas Relays at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday (March 26).

The mark is also a new Jamaican national record, eclipsing the previous mark of 1.93 held by Sheree Ruff (nee Francis) since May 2010.

The 22-year-old Distin, a junior at Texas A&M, now holds the Jamaican national indoor record of 1.92 that she established in February at the Don Kirby Elite Meet in New Mexico and at the NCAA Division I Indoor Finals on March 12 in Birmingham, Alabama, as well as the outdoor record.

MEETS QUALIFYING STANDARD FOR 2022 WORLD CHAMPS

The1.96m mark is also a school record and the fifth-best collegiate jump of all time.

With the clearance, Distin also met the qualifying standard for the 2022 World Athletics Championships that will be held in Eugene, Oregon in July.

Naturally, she was excited about the performance that made her the best ever Jamaican female high jumper.

Olympian Shanieka Ricketts

Several fellow Jamaican athletes responded with congratulatory messages.

“Congratulations @lamaradistin so happy for you. Blessings,” said Olympian Shanieka Ricketts.

World Indoor Championships gold medalist Junelle Bromfield and Distin’s fellow Texas A&M athlete Charokee Young also posted congratulary emojis in response to her post.

Also, at the meet, Baylor’s Ackera Nugent rebounded from her disappointment of failing to make the final of the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a third place finish in the 100m hurdles.

Nugent clocked a wind-aided 12.72 in the race won by LSU’s Alia Armstrong in 12.33.  Texas A&M’s Kaylah Robinson clocked 12.49 for second place.

The headwind was measured at -2.5 m/s.
