Lawrence, Brathwaite and Williams shine at USATF Sprint Summit in Texas

Shadae Lawrence won the discus at the USATF Sprint Summit in Texas on Saturday (April 3) to secure her third victory of the season at a meet where several other Caribbean athletes excelled.

Lawrence, who is eyeing a spot on Jamaica’s team to the Tokyo Olympics this summer, was among several Caribbean athletes who won their events at collegiate and professional meets in the United States this weekend.

Shane Brathwaite of Barbados won the 110m hurdles while Jamaicans Chrisann Gordon-Powell and Shian Salmon won silver medals in the 400m and 400m hurdles, respectively.

Lawrence won the discus ahead of Rachel Dincoff of the USA, whose silver-medal throw of 57.72 came on her final attempt. Kelsey Card, also of the USA, uncorked a throw of 55.50m for third.

Barbadian Brathwaite was an easy winner 110m hurdles. His winning time of 13.82 was almost 0.20 clear of the USA’s Ryan Fontenot who clocked 14.00.

Haiti’s Jeff Julmis registered a slow 14.50 for third.

Gordon-Powell opened her season with a solid 52.47 but had to settle for the runner-up spot behind the USA’s Jessica Beard who won the event in 52.38. Both women left Jaide Stepter Baynes (52.54) in their wake.

Shian Salmon also second in the 400m hurdles, clocking 56.90 while finishing behind the USA’s Ashley Spencer who stopped the clock in 56.36.

Gianna Woodruff of Panama was third and Sparkle McKnight of Trinidad and Tobago were third and fourth, respectively in 57.22 and 57.40, respectively.

Mario Burke ran a season best 10.51 for third in the men’s 100m was won by Liberia’s Emmanuel Matadi in 10.29s.

Isiah Young of the USA finished second in 10.35 with Odean Skeen of Jamaica fourth in a relatively pedestrian 10.55.

Elsewhere in Texas on Saturday, Stacey-Ann Williams, Obrien Wasome and the imperious Tyra Gittens won their respective events at the Texas/Texas A&M Dual Meet at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Williams, the University of Texas star quarter-miler held off the challenge of Texas A&M’s Charokee Young to win the 400m in 51.24. Young, the former Hydel 800m star, clocked a fast 51.52 for second ahead of her teammate Syaira Richardson, also of Texas A&M was third in 52.17.

Meanwhile, former Edwin Allen sprinter Kevona Davis, a freshman at Texas, clocked 11.35 while being beaten by her Texas teammate Kynnedy Flannel who took the win in 11.23.

Texas went 1-3 in the triple jump competition that was easily won by Texas’ O’Brien Wasome with a mark of 15.83m. Stacy Brown finished third with 14.65m. A&M’s CJ Stevenson split the two with his 15.19m jump.

A&M’s Gittens has been dominant in the high jump indoors this season. She has now taken that dominance outdoors winning the vertical leap with 1.90m, just three cm off her personal best 1.93.

Texas’ Marlene Guerrero and teammate Trinity Tomlinson were second and third respectively having both cleared 1.73m.
