Lawrence Rowe, former People’s National Party (PNP) caretaker-candidate for Central Kingston, has been released on bail after spending several hours in custody at the Allman Town Police Station on Monday (June 2).

The controversial political neophyte is charged with assault at common law and assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was offered bail for J$100,000 and is being represented by attorney-at-law John Clarke.

Rowe alleged that a dispute developed on May 26 after he attempted to record a video of supporters in the constituency of his successor, Steve McGregor, carrying out acts of vandalism.

He reported that an argument ensued, and his life was threatened.

Rowe stated that police came on the scene, and the vandals left the area and that he was advised to make a report to the Allman Town Police Station.

However, a video which surfaced online saw the caretaker aggressively shoving a man while hurling expletives and brandishing a knife.

The same man went to the police and reported that Rowe had assaulted him during their altercation.

Both men are due in court on June 26.
