American basketball great LeBron James has sent fans down the theoretical rabbit hole following a cryptic message on X.com, formerly Twitter, around 2:03 am.

The post was a single hourglass emoji and has since set social media on a hunt to figure out the basketball star’s meaning. 

Following a damning loss for the Lakers in their game against the Hawks (138-122) on Tuesday, Jan 30th, James in a subsequent interview said, “We could, on any given night, beat any team in the NBA. And then on any given night, we could get our ass kicked by any team in the NBA,”

The critical X post then followed later that night, which has since garnered 27 million views, 86,000 likes and 8,800 reposts with 7,100 quoted reposts last checked.

Fans have theorised that this could mean James is referring to his time at the Lakers coming to a close, which has resulted in the internet being congested with memes of photoshopped images of James in another team’s jersey as well as those dreading him leaving the team.

Others believe that the hourglass means the team has little time left in the season to pick up the slack. Regardless, spectators have no concrete idea about James’ meaning, and the online speculations continue to pick up steam. 

James has not posted on X since, leaving the ambiguous hourglass at the top of his feed adding fuel to the fiery online discourse.
