Pre-hurricane season storm development remains stymied by Saharan dust as the largest plume of dry air triggers alerts across the Eastern Caribbean this week.
Meteorological authorities in Barbados, Trinidad and St Lucia have advised citizens to take precautions as the incoming dust cloud impairs visibility and induces hazy conditions throughout the region beginning on Monday (May 26).
Satellite imagery tracking the dust plume over the last 24 hours shows the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) continuing to waft easterly from West Africa.
“A significant concentration of Saharan dust is present in the atmosphere. Sensitive persons should take necessary precautions,” noted the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service.
Despite rising sea surface temperatures in the tropical belt of the Atlantic Basin, the waves of Saharan dust have resulted in few cyclonic disturbances just a week before the official start of the 2025 Hurricane Season.
