Pop pop, where’s my lippie at?
Well there won’t be any popping, if you have very thin lips!
Oops- that’s why there are lip fillers now.
Lip fillers are designed to make your lips look plumper.
A quick fix is to pucker up them lips in a bottle and then pop the lips out.

Seriously though, lip fillers are usually a quick, in office procedure that should heal completely
within a matter of days.
Lip fillers are done through injections.
According to the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, lip injections are relatively safe.
The only, most disastrous negative side effect is the formation of granulomas, which are small lumps of immune
cells that form in your body in areas where there is infection or inflammation.
Our Today has listed the ‘need to knows’ about lip injection procedures, how to prepare for
an appointment, and the healing process that follows.
What are lip injections?
Most lip fillers are made from an ingredient called hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is
a clear, gooey substance that is naturally produced by the body.
Its main function is to retain water to keep your bodily tissues well lubricated and moist, which
can create a plump look or change the shape of your lips if it’s injected into strategic areas.
Alexis Parcells MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon and clinical instructor at RWJ Barnabas
Health in Shrewsbury, New Jersey said: “Our bodies naturally contain this acid, but we lose it as
we age.”

Some lip fillers may also contain a numbing agent like lidocaine, which makes the procedure less
painful, Parcells says.
According to Insider, lip filler doesn’t just make your lips bigger, depending on how your doctor
places the injections, you can achieve many different looks, including:
Greater definition of the lip line
Greater projection of the upper lip
Redefining the Cupid’s Bow (the two peaks in the middle of the top lip)
Smoothing lines on the lips
Lip injections may work best for people who don’t want to make a permanent change as the effects of lip filler generally wear off after six to 18 months.
However, people who want a longer-lasting effect might opt for a lip implant or fat transfer. This
procedure is typically more expensive.
Unfortunately, Janus Cosmetic and Medical Spa in Jamaica doesn’t offer this service.
Therefore, if Jamaicans would like to get their lips filled, they may have to ‘fly out’.
The typical cost of temporary lip fillers is US$600 to US$800 per syringe in the United States and most
patients only need one or two syringes to get the look they want.
Before the procedure
“Prior to your injection, you should stop any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements that
increase your risk of bleeding,” Parcells says.

You should stop medications about a week before the procedure, and include instead:
Pain relievers like ibuprofen and aspirin
Certain digestive medications like Alka Seltzer and Pepto Bismol
Anti-clotting medications like heparin and warfarin
Herbal supplements like ginseng and vitamin E
Insider further advises that, to prevent excess bruising, one should avoid drinking alcohol for 24
hours before the procedure, as alcohol causes your blood vessels to open wider.
That’s a task!
During the procedure
According to Parcells, your lip injection procedure should follow these steps:
The doctor may apply numbing cream to the lips about 20 minutes before the injection to help
alleviate any pain.
“The procedure takes around 10
minutes to perform.”

The doctor will then inject filler into various areas of your lips. “The procedure takes around 10
minutes to perform,” she says.
Once this is done, you need to massage your lips for a few minutes to help the filler spread
evenly.
In total, the procedure should take between 20 and 30 minutes.
Then, boom! You might just start to look like Kylie Jenner!

After the procedure
After your procedure, there are numerous steps one should take to into consideration regarding
healing the lips:
Apply ice packs to the lips to numb any pain and slow blood flow that can cause bruising.
Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours after the procedure
If one so desire to take the arnica supplement that would be a wise choice as it contains a wide
array of inflammation-fighting plant compound, such as sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and
phenolic acids. As such, it’s believed to help with pain management. Therefore, it is suggested to
apply for four to five days after the injection.
Don’t do any vigorous exercise for two days after getting filler. Exercise increases your blood
flow, which can contribute to bruising.
If you have a history of getting cold sores around your mouth, lip injections can trigger an
outbreak.
According to Parcells, if the patient has a history of getting cold sores around the mouth, lip
injections can trigger an infection or outbreak.
She said: “Make sure to tell your physician prior to injection as to get a prescription for an
antiviral drug and reduce the risk of an outbreak.”
She continued: “You can go back to work immediately after getting lip filler, but expect your lips to be swollen and/or bruised for three days following the procedure.”
Fortunately, results are immediate and will last up to a year or more, depending on how long it
takes the body to break down the hyaluronic acid filler.
So, in hindsight, three days of swollen lips isn’t that bad right?
Risks of lip injections
It’s rare for lip fillers to cause serious problems, but there are possible side effects that include:
Bruising
Infection
Scarring
The appearance of lumps under your skin
Blocked blood vessels that can cause tissue to die
But Parcells’ point of view is that: “If something does not feel or look right after the procedure,
reach out to the office and be seen if necessary.”

All in all, lip fillers are a semi-permanent way to plump up and define your lips.
It’s the new trend for females with thin lips.
Our Today stresses the importance of finding the right plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has
experience performing lip injections, whether in the island or out.
Insider suggests asking to see before and after photos and make sure they thoroughly
explain the procedure.
