Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange says the late ska and rocksteady artiste Kenrick Patrick formerly known as Lord Creator made a significant contribution to Jamaican music and was popular, particularly for his song, Independent Jamaica, which captured Jamaica’s joyous mood when we gained Independence 61 years ago.

Lord Creator passed away on Friday (June 30) at age 87 after ailing with an illness for some time.

“We consider it an honour that Trinidadian-born Lord Creator adopted Jamaica where he made what was his highest biggest hit along with other popular songs such as Evening News and Don’t Stay Out Late,” Grange said. “Worthy of note too, is that the UB40 version of another of Lord Creator’s hit songs, Kingston Town went platinum in March 2023.

In 1962, Lord Creator recorded Independent Jamaica with producer Vincent “Randy” Chin, which became the official song marking Jamaica’s independence from the British Empire on August 6 1962.

“I wish to express my deepest sympathy to Lord Creator’s widow, Nesline, his other family members, relatives and friends. His music will live on and Jamaicans will forever thank him for immortalising his song what is our greatest celebration to date, our independence. Rest in Peace. Lord Creator,” the Minister added.
