Jamaicans who have modified the muffler systems on their cars or motorcycles are being urged to fix them or attract a fine of J$10,000 under the new Road Traffic Act.

Mufflers are used to reduce the sound waves coming out of an exhaust, without restricting the flow of exhaust gases. But motorists sometimes modify them to give off loud and sometimes frightening noises.

The announcement of the new fine was made on the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) social media account today (January 30). The JCF then urged motorists to make the changes before February 1, 2023 when the New Road Traffic Act commence.

Jamaicans have for many years complained about the noise pollution that these modifications have brought to communities and roads all across the island. This has prompted many to make formal complaints to government officials, requesting that something be done to fix the issue.

Audley Shaw, minister of transport and mining.

Audley Shaw, minister of transport and mining, while speaking about the Act, said: “This legislation will aid in curbing indiscipline in the traffic environment and will see motorists facing tough sanctions for breaching the rules.”

Under the new Road Traffic Act, motorists will see heavier fines and punishments being given for their failure to comply with the rules of the road. Two of these include the suspension of licences and the issuing of warrants for outstanding tickets.

Since the announcement of the new Act, the Government has been urging motorists to pay their outstanding tickets before doom day, or face the consequences.
