Low voter turnout in St Ann North Eastern by-election

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown is reporting that as of 11 am, 5.12 per cent of the 43,827 registered voters in the St Ann North Eastern constituency have turned out for voting in the by-election this morning.

Brown told Our Today that this turnout is quite low when compared to the more than 15 per cent recorded in 2020.

“At 11 am it was 5.2 per It is low compared to 2020 at this point in time; it was a little over 15 per cent,” he shared.

Brown said he is anticipating an improvement in the turnout during the afternoon.

The voter turnout for the St Ann North Eastern constituency stood at 34 per cent in the 2020 general elections, with the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Marsha Smith securing 65 per cent (9059) of votes ahead of the People’s National Party (PNP) Keith Brown, with 35 per cent (4887).

The polls officially opened at 7:00 am and are set to close at 5:00 pm, after which the preliminary counting of ballots will immediately take place at each polling station.

Voting is now underway at 146 polling stations across 27 voting locations constituency-wide.
