A castration law for child rapists has been approved in Madagascar.

The law was brought to the Madagascan Parliament on February 2, and was approved last week.

The law has come to fruition as statistics suggest increase in child rape cases across the East African nation.

In 2023, 600 cases of the rape of a minor were recorded with 133 cases already amassed in since January 1.

The legislation states that those found guilty of raping a minor under the age of 10 will undergo surgical castration. Rapes that occur between the ages of 10 and 13 will result in chemical or surgical castration as a punishment. Chemical castration will be the penalty for raping a juvenile between the ages of 14 and 17.

Support for the law has been split, with the persons in agreement hoping it will result in a positive change of the despicable ‘rape culture’ in Madagascar.
