The latest crime statistics released by the police show that 1,282 people have been murdered across the island between January 1 and December 2.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) reports that the numbers represent a 10.2 per cent decline in murders, when compared to the same period last year with 1,428 murders.

Murders were recorded in all police divisions.

St James leads the tally with 172 murders. St Andrew South followed in second with 112, Westmoreland with 110, and St Catherine North with 108 murders.

All major crimes have dropped 11.4 per cent, when compared to the same period last year.

According to the latest statistics, shootings went down by five per cent, break-ins declined by 13.3 per cent, and rape were down by 17.4 per cent.

Robberies also fell from 859 to 720 when compared to the same period last year.

While official statistics have indicated a decline in all major crimes, Jamaicans continue to lament the high frequency of violent incidents, especially those involving triple and double murders.

The Government has implemented states of emergency, along with other crime-fighting methods. However, there is a call for more effective and immediate measures to address the root causes of these crimes.
