Many sections of Trinidad and Tobago are without electricity at this time, after a power outage struck the twin-island republic on Wednesday (February 16).
According to local media reports, the power disruption occurred around 1:00 pm Trinidad time.
With internet connectivity disrupted, the extent of the outage is unknown, while a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC)—the country’s sole electricity transmission and distribution company—cites a yet-to-be-determined, probable cause.
“Customers are advised that we are experiencing a major disturbance on the [national] system and are working to restore supply within the shortest possible time. The cause of the incident is, at this time, unknown,” TTEC advised via its Facebook page.
“Our 800 numbers are currently down, however, customers can contact the Call Center at 794-4823 or 794-7264. Please note due to high call volumes you will experience some delays. An update will be provided as soon as more information is available. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the utility provider added.
TTEC has been met with intense criticism from Trinbagonians on social media as many questioned how such a system failure could be allowed to happen.
