President Joe Biden was surprisingly spry and vigorous during his State of the Union address on Thursday evening (March 7).

Many were looking for him to make an utter mess of it, stumbling, incoherent, foggy-minded and unsteady on his feet.

He was quite the contrary and clearly articulated what he’s all about both as a man and as president of the United States. He drew a clear picture of what the United States would be under his leadership and that of Donald Trump.

Biden came across as that uncle who encourages you to do the right thing having done so his whole life. That uncle that doesn’t move so adroitly as you remember him but whose counsel you seek. The uncle you look up to and are proud of. The uncle whose approval you need.

Many Republicans and those on the right can’t believe that Biden could have delivered such a muscular address without the aid of some substance. Many say he was given something. one American newspaper ran the headline, “He’s Alive!”.

That is a little unkind but Biden showed that he can still pack a punch. Yes, he is old, but he is experienced and politically wiley. You discount him at your detriment.

Does America want to go down the traditional path where decency, fair play, a moral code and a sense of justice remain front and centre, or does it want to wade into uncharted territory where individualism and chaos are the order of the day?

The battle is now binary – it is Biden Vs Trump II.

Make no mistake, Trump’s popularity is gaining traction. Despite all the sexual scandals, women still favour him. Go figure.

Trump’s legal woes seem to be no impediment to Americans wanting him to be their next [resident. Make no mistake, Biden has a fight on his hands.

There is a lot he has to do between now and November.

He has made plenty of mistakes with his statements and he does look more feeble as time goes by but can he push the sun back into the sky for one more summer?

There’s a lot at stake and this may very well be his legacy.

At that State of the Union address, he showed there’s a lot of fight left in him. He’s not on the canvas yet. He’s still throwing out his jab.

Conservative media and those who back Trump say Biden does not have the acuity to be President. He is too old, feeble and mentally shot to hold the biggest job in the world, one that requires vitality, stamina and mental fitness.

Candace Owens is a conservative commentator who is articulate and very intelligent. In recent times she has become more combative and her stock has risen.

This is what she had to say about Biden’s performance at the State of the Union on Patrick Bateman David’s podcast show:

“I’m happy he made it through the end. The bar has been very low and he didn’t die. My perception always is that in those 26 minutes, (the address began 26 minutes later than scheduled) they gave him an injection of adrenaline in the butt, hoping he stays alive and he did. They’re giving him something obviously to get him through it, which is really sad.

“I think all of it feels tremendously performative. American people know we are not being led by the president of the United States. We know he does not have the mental faculties to lead and therefore there must exist a shadow government. We want to know who that shadow government is. This puppet presidency is nothing short of infuriating for the public to have to sit here and watch.”

That sentiment is shared by many of Owens’ fellow conservatives but there was something heartening watching and listening to the “old boy” fighting back and the aged lion who leads the pride roaring in defiance.

I am looking forward to November 5th, 2024 to watch two old bulls go toe to toe.
