Makhulu | Fani Willis must step down as DA of Fulton County. Here’s why

A motion to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from prosecuting the election interference case against Donald Trump is being heard in court and is dominating the American news cycle.

Fawning Willis was very combative, defiant, and truculent on the stand and all the Black Boss Bitches (BBB) out there cheered her on. She was their champion. “You go girl!”

Nevertheless, the fact remains that she hired the special prosecutor who was her lover and told no one about this relationship until she was forced to.

This alone diminishes her credibility in her heading the Fulton County District Attorney’s office. Her authority will be, whether overtly or tacitly, questioned and there will be underlings sniggering at the water cooler, the boss was having it off with the “special” prosecutor.

Nathan Wade himself said he and his boss the District Attorney engaged in sexual congress and were in a relationship.

Any way that is presented by lawyers who try to place focus on timelines and obfuscate the matter, is not a good look.

Fani Willis must do the right thing and step down as DA and a new DA with a different team should be found to prosecute this Georgia election case.

As it currently stands, the salaciousness and even talk of financial impropriety demean the legal process here.

It now turns out that a witness says the relationship began in 2019 which means Fani Willis hired her lover to take on Trump despite his credentials for this assignment being in question.

This puts her management of the office into disrepute.

How can Willis and Wade go back to work as usual with tawdry details of their relationship laid bare? It must have occurred to them that what they were doing would jeopardise their careers. It was high-risk folly.

While Willis was defiant on the stand, Wade seemed more passive and contrite. Willis was not called back to the stand the following day perhaps because she had already dug her own grave.

Willis and Wade took many trips together and it’s a wonder whether they ever had time to get any meaningful work done. The frequency of their vacations is telling.

October 22- A Caribbean Cruise to the Bahamas.

November 22 – A trip to Aruba

March 23 – A holiday in Belize

May 23- A wine tasting in California’s Napa Valley.

Wade said that the way it worked, he would book the trip on his credit card and that his lover would reimburse him her portion of expenses in cash.

“ No man pays my bills!”

Now the question is, did she hire someone she was dating to help him financially using taxpayer’s money?

Just the prospect of that being out there should see Willis step down and show some dignity.

All this carrying on makes her look ridiculous. Her behaviour should not be sanctioned. She allowed Trump’s team to skewer her and reveal her love life and its connection to her work.

Here’s what Donald Trump had to say on the matter: “DA Fani Willis is totally compromised and the case has to be dropped. When you look at what happened where they pay a lawyer nearly US$700,000 who happens to be her lover or boyfriend, then they go on trips and expensive vacations together. The reason they paid him so much was he was after me. That was a very sad thing that happened in Georgia. I would imagine that case is going to be dropped.”

The former president makes a good point and it is difficult to discount his assessment.

From an ethical perspective, Willis should step down and quietly walk away and avoid embarrassing herself and the office she holds.

She is in an untenable position and she should call it a day. It doesn’t look good.
