A 39-year-old man is in police custody following an incident in which he allegedly threatened and assaulted a police officer along Burke Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Saturday morning.

The suspect is being detained in relation to several offences, including threatening a police officer, assaulting the police, assault at common law, and breaches of the Firearms Act. His identity has not been disclosed as investigations continue.

Police reports indicate that at approximately 9:40 am, a police officer who was on duty in the area approached a bus stop near the Shoppers Fair supermarket. During the encounter, the man allegedly issued a threat to the officer before being confronted.

It is further alleged that when the officer attempted to apprehend the suspect and pointed out the offence, the man grabbed the officer’s Glock pistol. A struggle reportedly followed, causing both men to fall onto the roadway, during which a round was discharged.

Police say the suspect at one point aimed the firearm at the officer, but the officer managed to regain control of the weapon. Additional police personnel later arrived on the scene and assisted in subduing and arresting the suspect.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
