Long-time sporting partner Marathon Insurance Brokers (MIB) has strengthened its commitment to Jamaican athletics by renewing its sponsorship of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) with a $15 million package designed to deepen support for athletes, medalists, and the often-unsung heroes behind the scenes.
The announcement was made Friday by Keisha-Ann Burgher, executive vice president of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs at MIB, during a press conference at the JOA’s headquarters on Cunningham Avenue.
Burgher unveiled the details of the expanded deal:
- $10 million in direct financial sponsorship
- $5 million in travel insurance coverage for Jamaica’s Olympic team
- Free one-year insurance coverage for every athlete who medals at the upcoming games
- A special insurance programme for JOA staff, affiliate associations, and their employees, offering preferential rates on motor vehicle, property, and travel insurance
“Today isn’t just about renewing a contract. It’s about reaffirming our mission,” said Miss Burgher. “We know our athletes deserve more than applause—they deserve protection, peace of mind, and a true partnership that reflects the grit and excellence they bring to the track, field, court, or pool.”
Burgher emphasised that Marathon’s support goes far beyond mainstream disciplines, noting that the company has previously provided insurance coverage for athletes in beach volleyball, skateboarding, and other non-traditional sports.
“It’s not just about the high-profile events. It’s about the full spectrum of Jamaican talent. This package is not only encouragement—it’s a gesture of respect.”
The new staff insurance programme is a major highlight, designed to give back to those who Miss Burgher described as “the backbone of sport—the people behind the podium.”
Christopher Samuda, President of the JOA, welcomed the renewed sponsorship as a legacy-defining act of stewardship:
“Together, we are co-creators, contributors, and custodians of sport in Jamaica. This is a partnership that’s building a legacy—not only for this generation but for those that follow.”
Also speaking at the event, Tricia Robinson, President of Netball Jamaica, expressed gratitude for Marathon’s consistent presence:
“From elite leagues to grassroots tournaments, Marathon has been vital to our growth. Their support doesn’t just fund activities—it fuels dreams. And many of our athletes proudly choose Marathon for their personal insurance needs.”
Marathon, a member of the Federal Capital brand, has already invested over $40 million in the Jamaican sporting landscape. With this latest sponsorship, the company’s total contribution rises to over $55 million, reaffirming its position as a cornerstone of Jamaican athletic development.
