The Caribbean cruise industry is poised for significant growth over the next five years, cementing the region’s position as a global leader in cruise tourism.
This growth is intrinsically tied to Chukka’s continued success, as the company remains a key partner in delivering authentic, adventure-filled experiences that make the Caribbean a top destination for cruisers. With its year-round appeal, rich cultural diversity, and breathtaking natural beauty, the Caribbean offers unmatched experiences for travellers seeking adventure, relaxation, and connection.
The Caribbean is set to maintain its position as the world’s fastest-growing cruise market, driven by the introduction of mega-vessels and luxury ships. These mega-ships, capable of carrying a minimum of 4,500 passengers per vessel, are transforming the cruise experience by offering resort-like amenities, fine dining, and expansive entertainment options.
Nearly half of the new cruise capacity in 2024 came from these ships, and this trend will continue through 2029. The Caribbean is expected to be a significant recipient of this tonnage, benefiting from its year-round appeal and diverse experiences that continue to attract millions of cruisers annually.
Global cruise tourism passenger numbers for 2024 came in at approximately 36.3 million, with the Caribbean hosting 15.4 million passengers, representing 42 per cent of the global total. These numbers highlight the region’s strong position within the cruise industry and its capacity for sustained growth.
In 2025, projections show an increase to 37.9 million global passengers, with the Caribbean welcoming 16.3 million, or 43 per cent of the global share. Looking further to 2029, the industry is expected to reach 43 million annual passengers, with the Caribbean anticipated to attract 17.8 million, maintaining a significant share. This represents an increase of over two million passengers to the region since 2024 – a 15.6 per cent growth. Such steady gains clearly demonstrate the region’s resilience and potential, underscoring the opportunities available to those invested in the Caribbean’s success as a premier cruise destination.

One of the increasing trends coming out of this growth are shorter itineraries, with more frequent visits to destinations like the Bahamas and select parts of the Caribbean. While private islands have become a central feature of these itineraries, the region as a whole continues to benefit from the trend. Chukka Caribbean Adventures is proud to offer unique, immersive excursions that go beyond the typical cruise experience. Our nature-adventure tours and culturally-driven experiences ensure that every guest leaves with a deeper connection to the rich heritage and natural beauty of Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Jamaica has long been one of the Caribbean’s top cruise destinations, and this will only strengthen in the coming years with the growth of new mega-ships. Jamaica’s infrastructure, cultural appeal, and natural beauty make it an essential stop on any Caribbean itinerary. Although Jamaica has five ports, our three primary ports – Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Falmouth – are already key destinations, and we are ready to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of the industry’s evolving landscape.

At Chukka, we’ve been proactively preparing for this inevitable growth by expanding our offerings and strengthening partnerships with cruise lines to remain a key player in new itineraries for mega and luxury ships. Our commitment to nature-adventure tourism, coupled with deep roots in local communities, ensures that every excursion contributes to the long-term sustainability of the tourism industry in the islands we operate.
One of our key success factors is the Chukka Foundation, which enables us to extend our impact beyond tourism by investing in the local communities where we operate and their surrounding areas. Through initiatives such as supporting educational programmes, fostering sustainable livelihoods, and promoting conservation, we ensure the benefits of tourism are shared widely across Jamaica and the five other countries where we have operations. This commitment to community engagement reinforces our role as a responsible, forward-thinking leader in the Caribbean’s cruise tourism sector.
The rise of private islands in the Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean has been one of the most significant trends in the cruise industry. Cruise lines are increasingly focusing on these private destinations, which offer resort-style amenities and a curated environment for passengers. Some of these islands are growing at a pace five times faster than the broader cruise industry.

This trend creates exciting opportunities to combine the curated experience of private islands with authentic cultural experiences at traditional ports. For passengers seeking a deeper connection with the Caribbean’s diverse culture, itineraries blending private islands with traditional destinations provide the perfect balance. At Chukka, we take pride in offering experiences that go beyond the beach, immersing our guests in what makes Jamaica and the Caribbean truly unique.

The next decade presents exciting opportunities for the Caribbean cruise industry, with Jamaica and Chukka poised to benefit significantly from this growth. As mega-vessels and luxury ships are increasingly deployed across Caribbean itineraries through 2029, the region’s unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and unparalleled experiences will set it apart on the global stage.
At Chukka Caribbean Adventures, we are proud to be at the forefront of this transformation. By fostering partnerships with cruise lines, delivering exceptional excursions, and committing to sustainability and community enrichment, we are shaping a future where tourism not only thrives but uplifts the destinations we call home. Through innovation, authenticity, and a dedication to preserving the environment and culture of Jamaica, Chukka is helping to redefine what it means to cruise the Caribbean: authentic, sustainable, and unforgettable.

Marc Melville, CEO of Chukka Caribbean Adventures, has expanded the company into the Caribbean’s largest nature-adventure operator, spanning six countries. Together with his partner and executive deputy chairman, John Byles, they lead Chukka’s mission to deliver exceptional adventures while fostering sustainable tourism and community development. Marc also serves on the boards of Tropical Battery and Rainforest Seafoods.
