Lee “Scratch” Perry

Born on March 20, 1936 in Kendal, Hannover, Lee “Scratch” Perry was a Jamaican music legend who produced for music icons such Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, Max Romeo and The Congos.

Also known as “The Upsetter”, Perry later pioneered modern dub music with his early adoption of remixing and using studio effects to create new instrumental versions of reggae songs.

In the early 1970s, Perry established his own recording studio in Kingston, Jamaica, called Black Ark. It was here that he produced some of his most groundbreaking work, experimenting with sound and incorporating elements of dub, funk, and soul into his music.

In the 1980s, Perry relocated to Europe, where he continued to produce music and perform live shows. He collaborated with a wide range of artists, from the Clash to the Beastie Boys, and his influence can still be heard in contemporary music today.

He passed away on August 29, 2021 at the age of 85 years old.
