English-born Mason Greenwood has finally secured his Jamaican passport and is now a step closer to representing the Reggae Boyz.

Jamaica Football Federation Acting General Secretary, Roy Simpson, confirmed the development to Our Today on Wednesday, as Jamaica celebrated its 63rd year of Independence from the British Monarchy.

The 23-year-old Greenwood, who has represented England and Manchester United, has ditched the red, blue and white of England for the green, black and gold of Jamaica, just as the Caribbean nation did in 1962.

“Yes, he has gotten his passport. Getting his passport is a critical part of the process,” said Simpson.

Greenwood, who will be 24 in October, has one cap for England in 2020. He represented England at all levels of Youth football, Under-15, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21.

He also played 83 times for Manchester United, scoring 22 goals, before he departed after an attempted rape and assault charges against him were dropped in 2023.

It is now up to Greenwood to officially request the change of association to be approved by FIFA. He now has to provide a signed letter stating that he understands that a change of association from the English FA to the Jamaica Football Federation is permanent.

If and when Greenwood represents Jamaica, he would be the highest-profile English-born player to join the Reggae Boyz, as none before had represented England at the senior level.

Greenwood is currently at French club Marseille and scored in their pre-season game against Sevilla, which ended 1-1 last Saturday.

He has been in tremendous pre-season form, scoring a hat-trick against Dutch side Excelsior and has taken his tally to six goals as he prepares for the start of the Ligue 1 season.

Jamaica’s World Cup qualifiers continue with a game away to Bermuda on September 5, before hosting Trinidad and Tobago on September 9 and Curacao on October 10.
