
A massive contact tracing exercise is underway in Grenada after a US tourist tested positive for the coronavirus hours before she was scheduled to leave the island.
Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shawn Charles, described the case as unique as the woman had tested negative on arrival into the island just days earlier on July 26.
The fully vaccinated tourist, who is in her early twentiesv is said to have visited 10 places in Grenada between July 28 and August 3.
The Ministry of Health said that so far only 1 contact has been traced and that individual has been isolated and samples taken for further testing.
Charles used the occasion to reiterate the importance of citizens following the recommended protocols, adding that the delta variant is considered far more contagious and deadly, though the variant has not been detected on the island.
“People must continue to follow the recommended protocols, physical distancing, avoiding mass gatherings, wearing masks in public spaces, regular hand washing or sanitization,” said Charles.
“Further, the Ministry of Health advises that persons who may be experiencing flu-like symptoms should isolate themselves and contact their nearest health facility,” he added.
The latest case involving the US tourist brings the the total number of cases in Grenada to 170.
