Several communities have been cut off and reportedly left without power near Hardwar Gap in rural St Andrew, after a massive landslide along the roadway today (August 31). As a result, motorists have been forced to find alternate routes through Portland or along the ATV trail at the Holywell Nature Park.
The landslide is about half a kilometre from Hardwar Gap, which is between Newcastle and Holywell.
While efforts have already got under way to remove the debris and reopen the road, it is not expected that many travellers will be impacted if the work can be completed by the end of the night as today remains a no-movement day.
It was not immediately clear whether the landslide was caused by the recent rains associated with weather-system Ida that battered the island before becoming a category 4 hurricane and devastating Louisiana in the United States over the weekend.
