Confidence is at the heart of every purchase, and as digital payments become a part of everyday life in Jamaica, Mastercard is making sure that every tap, swipe, and click is backed by world-class security.
Behind the scenes, Mastercard’s global network – supported by regional mission control and operations centres – monitors transactions in real time, to help keep payments secure, reliable, and working smoothly across the Caribbean.
With fraud attempts growing more sophisticated worldwide, Mastercard is equipping consumers with smarter tools and protections so they can spend with ease and peace of mind.
Here are five easy ways Mastercard helps customers spend smarter and safer every day:
1. Shop with trusted local vendors and verified websites
Whether you are purchasing from a physical store or ordering something on Instagram, check for proper business listings or secure checkout pages. Mastercard says, if it feels off, it probably is, and avoiding random links or unknown sellers is always the right choice.
2. Use contactless payments wherever possible
Contactless payments are secure because each transaction uses a unique encrypted code that cannot be reused, which helps to prevent fraud. It is also fast, allowing customers to check out in seconds, which keeps lines moving during busy periods. Since the card or device never leaves your hand, it reduces physical contact, making it a more hygienic way to pay.
3. Keep Your Card Details Private
Never share your PIN. Keeping your PIN safe and confidential will protect you from fraudulent ATM cash withdrawals. Similarly, never share one-time passcodes (OTPs) or full card details over text, email, or social media. Be cautious of unsolicited calls or messages that ask for financial information, even if they appear to come from a trusted source.
3. Set up alerts and check your banking app regularly
Real-time alerts from your bank can help you spot suspicious activity before it becomes a problem. Mastercard offers its partner banks fraud detection tools that provide cardholders with transaction alerts 24/7 to flag unusual patterns.
5. Know you’re backed by Mastercard’s Zero Liability protection
As a Mastercard cardholder, you are protected by the Zero Liability policy. This means that the financial institution that issued your card will not hold you responsible for unauthorised transactions on your account if the following conditions are met:
1. You exercised reasonable care in protecting your card from loss or theft; and
2. You promptly reported the loss or theft to your financial institution.
This protection applies to transactions made in stores, online, over the telephone, through mobile devices, and at ATMs. However, zero Liability does not apply to all Mastercard products as the policy excludes certain commercial cards and unregistered prepaid cards, such as gift cards.
Mastercard partners with financial institutions and local fintechs in Jamaica to expand access to secure digital tools, from contactless cards to enhanced fraud protection. As new AI-powered payment experiences begin to roll out across Latin America & the Caribbean, Mastercard continues to design them with security, transparency and consumer control at the centre, ensuring innovation never comes at the expense of safety. With digital payments offering freedom and flexibility, Mastercard remains committed to equipping consumers with the tools, resources and solutions to actively and safely participate in the digital economy.
