Small businesses are the backbone of Jamaica’s economy, and their growth depends on keeping pace with how customers want to pay.

Today, more Jamaicans are choosing digital payments over cash, and businesses that adapt are seeing stronger sales, smoother operations, and new opportunities for growth. Mastercard is helping micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) embrace this shift with tools that make it easier to get paid, plan ahead, and build for the future.

Here are four simple ways Mastercard recommends small businesses can boost their earnings through digital payments:

1Accept contactless payments to move faster

From community shops to pharmacies, contactless transactions are becoming standard, and Mastercard says customers value speed and ease, especially when shopping in crowds or on-the-go. Additionally, offering flexible options for busy customers creates less friction as it is now seen as a customer expectation and not a bonus.

2. Use your phone to take payments

Mastercard’s Tap on Phone solution allows vendors to accept card payments directly on their smartphones; no terminal required. Having already rolled this out with over 600 micro-merchants in Montego Bay, it is seen as the perfect tool for mobile vendors, salon owners, or anyone operating with limited space.

Mastercard is also committed to financial inclusion. In partnership with banks and local governments, the company is helping MSMEs formalise, access tools, and build stronger digital foundations. The recent MoU with the St. James Municipal Corporation, for example, focuses on supporting digital growth for vendors in high-traffic tourism zones.

3. Take advantage of seasonal trends and bundle deals

Spending is sometimes driven by convenience. Create simple package offers or seasonal promotions and make them easy to purchase with digital payments. This not only boosts revenue but also encourages higher-value transactions.

4. Use digital payment insights to plan and grow smarter

Each time you accept a digital payment, you create a data trail that helps track sales, manage cash flow, and forecast future needs. Mastercard is helping small businesses across Jamaica and the Caribbean turn these insights into action, using digital tools that make it easier to analyse trends, plan inventory, and make informed financial decisions. Through initiatives like Mastercard Day Jamaica, the company continues to champion a more inclusive digital economy where MSMEs have the information and tools they need to grow sustainably.
