Mauricio Pochettino only lasted one season with the Chelsea hierarchy not happy with the sixth position in the English Premier League (EPL) after spending £1 billion on a misfiring team.
The 52-year-old Argentine has been removed as Chelsea’s manager and it is reported to be by ‘mutual consent’.
Chelsea FC had a woeful season and only picked up a head of steam over the last eight matches, winning five on the spin.
At one point, it looked like ‘The Blues’ would finish in the bottom half of the table, ruling them out of any European competition.
Pochettino did well getting them into the Europa League and finishing the season on 60 points.
It was generally thought that he would be given next season to get things right, after all, the team were plagued by the worst injury list on the EPL.
The ownership structure including Todd Boehly didn’t see it that way. With no Champions League football next season and far too many dismal performances, it bid Pochettino farewell.
The owners issued a statement today (May 21) which reads: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him the very best in his future coaching career.”
This is the third manager Chelsea has had since Roman Abramovich sold the club in May 2022.
Finishing sixth, making the Carabao Cup Final and the FA Cup semifinal would be seen as respectable for most managers first season at a big club.
Pochettino did a good job with Tottenham getting the north London club challenging for the EPL title and into a Champions League final.
In 2021, he was appointed head coach of Paris Saint-Germain where he saw the team fall short as runners-up in Ligue1, a point behind Lile. In July 2022, he was sacked.

It is clear that the Chelsea ownership felt things weren’t working. With no Champions’ League, it felt it was a failed season.
Pochettino was well regarded by the team and the fans but Chelsea doesn’t give managers time to bring glory to the club, it demands instant success.
The Argentine may not have been happy, expecting to have a greater say in transfers and signings thus allowing him to build a team around his football philosophy.
