Councillor Colin Gager, chairman of the Trelawny Municpal Corporation, has outlined plans for the further development of the Falmouth Transportation Centre.

As explained in a recent press briefing, the Falmouth mayor described the centre as a “work in progress” and that upwards of J$40 million has already been spent on upgrades.

Gager revealed that there are plans to install additional bus and passenger shelters and more commercial spaces.

According to the mayor, there has already been positive results from the recent renovations as there is a notable reduction in the chronic traffic congestion in the town centre and well as improvement in the problems associated with unsanitary practices in public places.

“We are happy that we now have a transportation centre [in operation], and although we have the basic infrastructure there, the passenger shelters are not enough. We are expecting… in the near future, to have proper covering… . The work is not finished,” explained Gager.

He reported that coverage included the bus and taxi parking bays as well as the entrance and exit at the centre.

The most recent project, which involved extensive pavement work and construction of offices for the corporation’s staff, a police post and commercial structures, was in an advanced stage of completion.

“In addition to the road [along Thorpe Street] leading to the Falmouth Transportation Centre, the [entire ground] was paved using asphalt concrete as final covering for [a surface area of] 4,907 square feet,” Mayor Gager noted.

The councillor was pleased with the level of compliance by the transport operators and commuters and noted that the operation of the facility also aids the vendors and patrons of the weekly market.

Gager further disclosed that air conditioning units are to be installed, with furniture to be acquired to accommodate the police and corporation staff.

The mayor also mentioned that there is interest from businesses who wish to have a branch of operation inside the park as well as transport associations who have applied to have their offices in the centre. Gager said serious consideration is being given to the applications.
