Mother’s influence

The 28-year-old from Houston, was raised by her mother Holly Thomas who died after her battle with cancer in 2019.  Holly herself was previously a rapper, going by the moniker Holly-Wood. She would take Pete with her to the recording studio regularly during her short stint as a rapper. Before her death, Holly functioned as Megan’s manager and is even credited as one of the earliest influences on the ‘Body‘ hitmaker’s trajectory into the world of rap,

“My mom is the first female rapper I’ve ever known,” she said proudly to Vulture in a 2019 interview.

Megan Thee Stallion graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health administration at Texas Southern University. Her pursuit of this field came after she watched her grandmother take care of her great-grandmother. She pursued this degree while at the genesis of her fame, “I literally was on the way to a show and I’m in the Sprinter typing a paper at the same time.” 

Megan made it a point to show women, especially those who want to pursue music that making the unnecessary choice between education and passion is not a must for everyone. She’s a firm believer in the idea that anyone can do both.

Accomplished both academically and within the entertainment sphere, the ‘Big Ole Freak’ rapper is also a humanitarian starting the “Don’t Stop” scholarship find in partnership with Amazon Music’s Rap Rotation. The scholarship was made available to women of colour pursuing higher education.
