The Jamaica Meteorological Service says a severe weather alert has been activated for the entire country amid the impending effects of a trough straddling the western Caribbean.

The Met Service noted Tuesday (May 21) that unstable weather should induce increased rainfall island-wide into Wednesday last for the rest of this week.

As Jamaicans finally get a reprieve from the dry Saharan Air Layer and high surface temperatures, the local weather watchdog warned that rains could be heaviest in the eastern end of the country.

“There is some potential for flooding and a flash flood watch could be issued later if deemed necessary. Additionally, strong gusty winds are also expected mainly across southern parishes on Tuesday and Wednesday,” the agency noted.

The Met service further advised fisherfolk and marine interests to exercise caution as sea conditions are likely to quickly deteriorate in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms.
