The Meteorological Service of Jamaica (Met Service) in a media release has advised that posts being circulated about significant rise in temperatures over the next few days are misleading.

While temperatures are forecast are rise due to a number of factors including global warming, the weather monitoring authority said that such increases should not exceed two degrees Celsius.

“The Meteorological Service is aware of posts being circulated in the media indicating that temperatures across Jamaica could increase five degrees above normal in the next five days. Although the graphic outlook accompanying the most seems to be from a trusted source, the interpretation has been somewhat misleading,” the release read.

According to the agency, data now available indicate that temperatures are projected to be one to two degrees Celsius higher than what usually obtains at this time of the year. As such, it said the public should anticipate increased humidity due to cloudy conditions, while rainfall can cause the temperature to feel warmer.

In recent weeks the country has been experiencing higher than normal temperatures ranging between one and three degrees Celsius, which is higher than is experienced at this time of the year.

“This is consistent with reports of elevated global temperatures since the start of the year, as well as projections that were presented by the Meteorological Service for the May – July period,” the release outlined.

With this in mind, the Met Service is reminding the public to maintain “adequate hydration” and to make every effort to remain cool.

From Wednesday to Friday of this week, the Met Service has forecast mainly sunny mornings and partly cloudy afternoons across sections of western parishes and hilly areas. It will be especially windy across southern parishes.
