NCB Financial Group chairman Michael Lee-Chin will be the first guest speaker at the AE Circle, a curated event where leaders in their field speak on their chosen topic.

This event takes place on Tuesday (July 23) at the S Hotel in Kingston, more specifically the Strings & Stones Restaurant.

The AE Circle event is not open to the public and is already at full capacity.

Lee-Chin will be speaking on the subject of ‘Setting standards and the agent-principal problem‘.

His audience will comprise business leaders, movers and shakers.

The principal-agent problem arises when the interests of a company’s owners (the principals) are not aligned with those of its managers (the agents) who make decisions on their behalf.

This can lead to conflicts of interest, as managers may prioritise their own goals over the objectives of the company’s owners.

Michael Lee-Chin acquired AIC in 1987 when it had less than $1 million in assets under management. By 2002, with Lee Chin’s mutual funds and wealth management skills, the Canadian company AIC had $12 billion in assets under management. AIC was sold to Canada’s Manulife in 2009.

Born in Jamaica and living in Canada, Lee-Chin acquired a 75 per cent interest in NCB in 2002 and turned it into Jamaica’s most profitable bank with the most depositors over the next twenty years. He is also chairman of the private equity group, Portland Holdings.

“Your greatest asset is not your wealth but your mindset.

“Success is not a destination, it is a journey of continuous growth and improvement,” said Lee-Chin.

Speaking on this partnership with Appleton on the AE Circle, Our Today’s founder and CEO Al Edwards said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Appleton on the AE Circle. These will be classy events for specially invited guests who can take away something of value from the occasion.

“I think there is a lot that can be learnt from Michael Lee-Chin and I am sure he will impart wisdom and insights on Tuesday evening at the S Hotel in Kingston.

“Appleton Estate is the epitome of excellence and quality and has remained so for centuries. That’s a unique position to be in Jamaica today.”
