The Mico University College has launched a Christmas outreach initiative aimed at bringing comfort, joy, and tangible support to children in communities across western Jamaica that continue to feel the harsh effects of Hurricane Melissa.

As part of this effort, the university is inviting the general public, corporate partners, alumni, churches, and civic organisations to contribute toys and gifts for distribution to children in need.

Mico president Dr Asburn Pinnock, in a statement during the institution’s annual Christmas carol service, explained that the initiative reflects the institution’s longstanding commitment to service, compassion, and national development.

Pinnock emphasised that the Christmas season calls not only for celebration, but for intentional acts of goodwill that respond to real human need.

“Education is inseparable from care,” Pinnock noted in his address. “When children suffer, our responsibility extends beyond the classroom. Through this initiative, we are reminding them that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.”

Gifts collected through the toy drive will be delivered this week to three communities in western Jamaica, where many families and children remain vulnerable following the storm. The outreach will focus particularly on children, recognising the emotional and psychological impact that natural disasters can have during the holiday season.

Mico University College is encouraging donors to contribute new or gently used toys, age-appropriate gifts, educational items, and other child-friendly supplies. Monetary contributions toward logistics and distribution are also welcome. This Christmas outreach builds on Mico’s historic role as an institution deeply rooted in service to the Jamaican people.

All donations will be carefully coordinated to ensure transparent, dignified, and effective delivery to the intended beneficiaries.
