The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining has launched an investigation into the derailment of a train into the Rio Cobre, at the entrance of the Bog Walk rail tunnel in St Catherine, on Saturday.

Portfolio Minister Floyd Green said in a release that he “has instructed both the Jamaica Bauxite Institute and the Mining Division to conduct a full and rigorous investigation into the circumstances that led to the derailment”.

The joint probe aims to identify causes and recommend safety improvements to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.

The Windalco-operated train left the tracks and caused damage to at least one utility pole, resulting in disruptions to the electricity supply in nearby communities.

Additionally, the incident prompted a temporary closure of the gorge, resulting in traffic delays, as restoration efforts swiftly commenced.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining expressed both relief and gratitude that no lives were lost in the incident.

“We are grateful that no injuries were sustained in today’s incident. The safety of our workers, communities and infrastructure remains paramount. I have directed that a full and transparent investigation be undertaken immediately, and we are committed to implementing any necessary measures to safeguard against future occurrences,” Green said on behalf of the ministry.

At present, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining continues to monitor the situation closely while supporting remediation efforts. It has committed to sharing the findings and recommendations when they are available.
