Dr Kasan Troupe, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education and Youth, says the entity is far advanced in its recruitment exercise for overseas teachers to fill vacant positions in the education sector.

Troupe, who was speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday (July 31), said ambassadors from the Philippines and Ghana have approached her ministry regarding access to teachers from these countries.

“We did our research, and we found that many of these countries, international organisations and other countries have also recruited from these spaces, so we got some confidence from that with respect to our research,” she noted.

Troupe noted that these teachers have shown their interest in working for the same compensation as teachers in Jamaica. She also noted that a number of volunteers were needed to fill positions in science and mathematics subjects.

Meanwhile, the permanent secretary noted that several English language teachers have resigned. Despite not providing any statistics, Troupe noted that the figure for this year is not as great as the previous year.

Some 854 teachers resigned from the education sector up to September last year.

Currently, 90 teachers from other countries, such as Cuba, are already serving in the local education sector.

Troupe says the aim of this recruitment exercise for teachers is to provide options for principals.
