Minor earthquake felt in Kingston and St Andrew

A minor earthquake was felt in parts of Jamaica early Wednesday morning, according to the Earthquake Unit at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona.

The tremor occurred at 3:47 am and registered a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located approximately five kilometres north-east of Gordon Town in Kingston, at a focal depth of 17 kilometres.

Jamaica lies along active tectonic boundaries and experiences small to moderate earthquakes periodically. The Earthquake Unit continues to monitor seismic activity across the island.

Residents are being reminded to remain prepared and to follow standard earthquake safety guidelines.
