Contestants in the Miss Jamaica World Eastern Region Contest 2025 learnt a new skill, making candles, on Thursday, October 16, 2025, when they visited the Artisan Village at Falmouth courtesy of the Tourism Enhancement Fund and received tutoring in the craft from Creative Director and Founder of Zanesia Ceramics Candle & Craft, Paige Garnett (far right).

The Miss Jamaica World Eastern Region contestants were treated to an unforgettable cultural experience on Thursday, October 16, during their visit to the Artisan Village at Falmouth, hosted by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF).

Upon entering the Village, the young women were greeted by the vibrant rhythm of traditional Jamaican music performed by the Village’s resident cast. The festive atmosphere quickly drew them into the singing and dancing, setting the tone for a day steeped in creativity and national pride.

The visit, designed to help contestants bond while gaining deeper appreciation for Jamaica’s artistic and cultural heritage, also offered hands-on exposure to the locally made products and experiences showcased at the Village—a project of the Ministry of Tourism, implemented through the Tourism Enhancement Fund.

Participants were divided into three groups to explore the traditional crafts of jerk preparation, basket weaving, and candle-making.

During the Gastronomy experience, 876 Pimento Jerk, proprietor Frank Walters shared the origins of Jamaica’s jerk tradition, tracing its roots from survival to culinary art, before inviting contestants to season and jerk their own chicken. “It was just great. I enjoyed every bit of it,” said food enthusiast T’Dane Gordon.

In another corner, Nevaeh Allen discovered a new passion while learning the art of basket weaving. “It was amazing,” she said. “We learnt how Jamaicans used to weave baskets for harvests and now those same skills make beautiful handbags and décor.”

Meanwhile, Creative Director of Zanesia Ceramics Candle & Craft, Paige Garnett, guided participants through the process of blending fragrances and pouring wax to create personalized candles. Contestant Chris-Ann Higgins praised the experience: “It’s inspiring to see a Jamaican woman succeed in this business. The Artisan Village lets visitors take home the scent and soul of Jamaica.”

Operations Manager, Natelege Johnson, said the Village was delighted to host the contestants. “We hope they, their families, and friends will return to experience a fun-filled, authentic day at the Artisan Village,” she said.

TEF Executive Director, Dr Carey Wallace, added that initiatives like this strengthen Jamaica’s tourism identity by highlighting the talent and creativity of its people.

“The Artisan Village at Falmouth embodies the best of Jamaica—where culture, craftsmanship, and enterprise come together to enrich our tourism experience,” Dr Wallace said.
