A man accused of attempting to break into a home in the Bona Vista Housing Scheme in Myersville, St Elizabeth, was beaten and set on fire by residents on Saturday. He has been identified by police as Jermaine Davis.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded around 2:00 pm when Davis was seen driving a black Toyota Voxy in the community. The vehicle is believed to have been used in a break-in at a house in the area.

Police say residents confronted Davis as he tried to leave the premises. During the struggle to restrain him, Davis allegedly pulled a knife. He reportedly escaped the initial confrontation and ran from the property, but was later cornered by another group of residents.

Investigators say Davis was stoned and beaten, after which both he and the motor car were set on fire.

When officers arrived, they discovered Davis lying on the roadway with his hands and feet bound by ropes. He showed signs of life and was rushed to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sources told the police that Davis had previously been implicated in another burglary in Manchester and was beaten in that earlier incident as well.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the alleged burglary and the deadly mob attack.
