Montego Bay United’s Argentine coach Rodolfo Zapata believes his team can win every game following their impressive 4-1 thrashing of Craig Butler’s Vere United as the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League kicked off over the weekend.
Zapata, who replaced Brazilian Neider Dos Santos, is pleading with St James fans to support his team.
“You know I grew up in Argentina, so it will be Argentinian style — ball control, short passes, passion and winning mentality. So, we want to win everything, we want to win every single game,” said Zapata.
Montego Bay United’s dismissal of the Clarendon-based Vere United at the Wembley Centre of Excellence was a clear indication that the team was on course to fulfil that dream.
“I am so proud. I strongly believe that our boys are going to win every game in the most fashionable way. We are looking forward to a good season, so I would like to invite all Montego Bay fans to support the team,” said Zapata.
“But it’s step by step, one game at a time,” he added.
Montego Bay United surged to the top of the league on goal difference courtesy of goals from Jordan Britto (7th), Brian Brown (72nd) and two penalties from Owayne Gordon (78th) and Shaniel Thomas (87th). Damion Thomas had pulled Vere level in the 11th minute.
Meanwhile, former Reggae Boyz Oneil “Bigga” Thompson and Jermaine “Teddy” Johnson made a winning start as coaches of the promoted Chapelton Maroons of Clarendon, which stunned former champions Harbour View 2-1.
Javell Ellis opened the scoring for Chapelton in the 10th minute before veteran Andre Fagan glanced home a header on the hour mark. Just three minutes later, Nathaniel Howe flicked the ball over a defender and fired home the winner in minute 63.
At the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, home team Arnett Gardens whipped Dunbeholden FC 3-0 with two quick-fire goals from Warner Brown in the ninth and 10th minutes. Kimani Arbouine put the icing on the cake in the 55th minute.
St Ann-based Mount Pleasant blanked Portmore United 2-0 at the Ferdie Neita Park in St Catherine. Suelae McCalla opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Shaquiel Bradford completed the win on the stroke of half-time.
The ever-dangerous Atapharoy Bygrave gave Waterhouse a 1-0 win over the promoted Racing United of St Catherine.
