The tiny British overseas territory of Montserrat, home to fewer than 5,000 people has reopened its borders to vaccinated visitors effective October 1.
Montserrat is allowing vaccinated visitors through its borders but they will need to quarantine for five- days and take a PCR test on Day 4. The island has had a novel approach to keeping its tourism intake reassuringly elite during the pandemic.
The island recently ended the two-month stay requirement for tourists. Montserrat opened its borders in April this year to holidaymakers, who make at least US$70,000 per year.
Under the remote worker programme, both vaccinated & unvaccinated visitors were required to quarantine for two weeks and then take a COVID-19 test before exploring the island. However, travellers were required to pass a financial background check but visitors have to commit to staying for at least two months.
Only 21 travellers from seven families met the Government’s selective criteria. take a COVID-19 test before exploring the island. The UK Government has put the island on its quarantine-free green travel list.
When Montserrat reopened to international remote workers earlier this year, having been closed since March 2020, the entry restrictions were rigorous such as persons visiting had to have a minimum annual income of $70,000 to be even considered. Just 21 travelers have made the cut so far, according to the New York Times this week.
But there’s good news for the shallower of pocket: The teensy volcanic island has reopened to vaccinated visitors from October 1.
