As the days draw nigh for the celebration of our mothers, there are many ways we can pay tribute to their sacrifices and selflessness, one of which is through music.

As we begin to prepare for the observance of a day that should be celebrated all year round, here are 9 songs you can either sing or play for your mom or someone who has been like a mother to you.

8. Mama Cooking

Mama Cooking, a track by Merciless, was performed on Bob Marley’s Redemption Song ‘riddim’. Speaking in the song’s intro, Merciless dedicates the track to his mother, who he calls Ms Etle.

Proclaiming his mother’s cooking as the greatest, Merciless details the different things that she has done for him and the values and principles she instilled in him as well.

Not only does he feel the need to confess that her cooking is the greatest in the 1993 track, but her counselling as well, sampling some of Marley’s lyrics along the way.

7. Son of A Queen

Son Of A Queen, by one of dancehall’s elite, Alkaline, is a song in which lyrics penned are dedicated entirely to his mother, Sharmain Bartley.

In the 2017 record, Alkaline, whose real name is Earlan Bartley, demonstrates his love and appreciation for her and all that she has done.

6. Mama You Alone

This popular I-Octane track is one in which the artiste lauds his mother for the sacrifices she had to make to ensure her children were okay.

The artiste details what seems to be real aspects of his life, highlighting the dead-beat character of his father. He then goes to on to note that he is living exactly how his mother instructed him to, a behaviour that can be likened to Proverbs 22:6.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

5. Mama Don’t Cry

Mama Don’t Cry, a track by Gyptian, is one where the artiste tries to comfort his mother and assures her that better days are ahead.

Wishing that every mom in the world was like his, he explained that not only does he appreciate all the things she has done, but he is more than willing to bear whatever pain and suffering he must go through before he gains legitimate success.

4. Mama

Released in 2012 on the Perfect Key Riddim, Mama is a track dedicated to mothers and all their efforts.

Martin, in the initial part of the track, Martin makes the song quite personal, saying that without his mother, Cherry, he wouldn’t be anywhere in life, and because of that he wouldn’t dare put anything above her.

In the chorus, he went on to to generalise the lyrics, encouraging those listening to appreciate their mother and sing along.

3. Mama’s Blessing

Anthony Cruz released this bop in 2005. The track was done on the popular fifth element ‘riddim’

Declaring that he loves his mother sincerely, Cruz, in this tribute, underscores all the great things she has done for him. The singer also notes that no one else is as dear to him as his mother.

2. Thank You Mama

One of the most recognised and popular songs on this list, Thank You Mama by Sizzla Kalonji, was realised in 2002.

Sizzla sings words of gratitude to his mother, not only for the things she has done for him since his birth, but also for carrying him for nine months, something which in no way can be described as an easy feat.

Proclaiming his mother as a queen, Sizzla vows that he will never disappoint her and he will always be there for her, no matter what.

1. Living Ain’t Easy

Living Ain’t Easy by Richie Spice featuring Snatcher Dogg is the third track on the former’s Universal album. On the record, the reggae singer shares that the world is a hard place to live in but, despite this, his mother still comes through and not just for him, but his siblings as well.

Detailing the sacrifices his mother had to make, Richie Spice lauds her on her ability to pull through, even when things are looking bleak.
