Mottley pledges support to Guyana following deadly fire

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has pledged her support to Guyana following the deadly fire at the Mahdia Secondary School on Sunday (May 21).

In a statement on Monday, Mottley said that words cannot simply describe the tragedy that occurred at the Mahdia Secondary School on Sunday.


“It is a moment in which Barbados and the entire Caribbean joins with Guyana in sharing their pain and loss. It is also a moment in which we rally with our Caribbean friends and family to aid in the healing and rebuilding process,”

She also offered her condolences to the Guyanese prime minister and the wider people of CARICOM member state following Sunday’s tragedy.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Barbados, I offer my most sincere condolences and have offered to [President] Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the Government and the people of Guyana, any support they will need during this painful and difficult time,” she said.

The fire is said to have started around midnight claiming the lives of 19 students living in the dormitory.
