A group of Westchester churches in New York will today wrap up their three-day collection of relief supplies for Westmoreland, severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa.

The effort spearheaded by the Church of God in Mount Vernon is aimed at assisting families in Grange Hill and four other towns in Westmoreland. Pastor for the church, Rev Carine Thompson, has family ties to the parish with her father, senior pastor Rev Clifford Thompson, and mother, Rev Corona Thompson BEING newlyweds when they pastored a pair of churches in the parish five decades ago.

They founded Church of God in Mount Vernon in 1983 after coming to the United States. Rev. Clifford Thompson administers several other churches in Westchester, which are assisting in the collection drive. This initial collection is for a shipment set to leave for Jamaica this week, but the church said in a news release that others will follow as the recovery effort is expected to take at least two years.

“Every item you give will bring comfort, love, and relief to families who’ve lost so much,” the church said in the release adding, “let’s come together and be the hands of hope for Jamaica.” Those interested in helping can drop off items at the Church of God, 245 South First Avenue, Mount Vernon, between 8 am and 6 pm today Monday, November 17.

The City of Mount Vernon is also assisting with hurricane relief efforts.
