Natasha Morrison became the fastest Jamaican woman in the world this year when she won the 100m at the Trufit Meet Series in Miami, Florida earlier today.

The 28-year-old MVP Track Club sprinter clocked 10.87 which, if ratified, will be the second fastest time in the world this year. Only Sha’Carri Richardson (10.72) has run faster. The time also betters Natalliah Whyte’s 11.07 at the Miramar South Florida Invitational earlier this month.

Morrison gave an early indicator of what was to come when she clocked 10.98 to win her heat in the preliminaries. Prior to today, the only time Morrison had run faster than 11 seconds, was in 2015 when she ran 10.96 in the heats at the World Championships in Beijing, China.

JAMAICANS FINISH FOURTH AND FIFTH

Tynia Gaither of The Bahamas was second in a season-best 11.02. Jasmine Abrams finished third in 11.19.

Two other Jamaicans in the race – Kashieka Cameron and Janeek Brown – of MVP Track Club and PUMA MVP International were fourth and fifth in 11.24 and 11.29, respectively.

Several other Jamaicans performed well at the meet. Julian Forte ran a season-best 10.03 for third in the 100m race won by American quarter-miler Fred Kerley in a personal best 9.91. The two were split by Joshua Washington who clocked 10.01.

Nigel Ellis, Forte’s MVP teammate, was fourth in 10.04, a new personal best.

MVP’s Janieve Russell won the women’s 400 in a creditable 52.12 ahead of compatriot Tiffany James who crossed the finish line in 52.67. Jordan Lavender finished third in 52.82. Meanwhile, PUMA MVP International’s Nathon Allen clocked 46.02 to win the men’s equivalent.

Warren Hazel finished in second place in 46.22 while Quintaveon Poole finished in third in 46.32.

Rising sprint hurdler Orlando Bennett won the 110m hurdles in a fast 13.32 over his more experienced compatriot Ronald Levy who ran a season best 13.39, a time that suggests that he is getting back to his best after recovering from a fractured shin.

Nicholas Anderson was also on the podium by virtue of his 13.61 for third.

In the Women’s 100m hurdles, Shermaine Williams, sister of 2015 World Champion Danielle Williams was third in 13.67. The race was won by Ebony Morrison in 13.00 ahead of Murlern Jean who clocked 13.11 for second place.

Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes ran 19.93 to win the 200m that was run with a trailing wind of 3.6m/s, well above the allowable limit of 2m/s. Joshua Washington clocked 20.60 for second place. Former Munro High School star Delano Williams, who also represents Great Britain, was third in 20.72.

Gaither, buoyed by her fast time in the 100m, won the half-lap sprint in 22.70. Indian national Nanda Srabani, who trains in Jamaica with MVP Track Club, was the runner up in 23.37. Jodean Williams was third in 23.59.

The race was run with an aiding wind of 3.0m/s.
