With the massive spike in new COVID-19 cases in recent days, the National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) today (February 8) urged the Government to reexamine any thought of further ongoing face-toface classes and reconsider its decision to resume sporting activities.
In a statement, the NPTAJ stated categorically that it was not in support of any Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships being held this year.
“We too, share similar concerns on the issue of public transportation and the greater risk of transmission, as well as the greater risk of exposure to the virus in the education sector based on the comorbidities of students, teachers and/or their family members,” the NPTAJ said, noting that its concerns had been forwarded to the relevant authorities.
“We wish to reiterate that our Government should place greater focus on connectivity and devices for our students, to facilitate full engagement in the online environment.”

Since last Thursday, the nation has confirmed 1,224 new cases of COVID-19, with more than 200 cases per day and a record 328 being reported for Friday, February 5.
Friday was the same day Olivia Grange, minister of culture, gender, entertainment, and sport, announced that the Government had given the go ahead for the resumption of sports across the island, albeit with no spectators and on a case-by-case basis.
