The Minnesota Timberwolves are turning the page on their G League operations, hiring Mahmoud Abdelfattah as head coach of their affiliate, the Iowa Wolves.
Abdelfattah, the 2022 G League Coach of the Year, brings a proven track record and fresh energy to a program that’s struggled in recent seasons. Iowa finished last in the league for the second straight year with a 7–27 record, leading to the departure of former head coach Ernest Scott after two seasons. In addition to his new role with Iowa, Abdelfattah will continue serving as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team.
Abdelfattah’s appointment is one of the first major moves made under the Timberwolves’ new ownership group, led by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who finalised their $1.5 billion takeover from Glen Taylor in June 2025. The 36-year-old coach made history as the first Muslim and first Palestinian to serve as head coach of an NBA or G League team when he led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, guiding them to a championship in 2022. That same season, he earned Coach of the Year honours.
Abdelfattah’s coaching journey began at St. Cloud State University, and he later served as an assistant with the Houston Rockets during the 2022–23 NBA season. Most recently, he took the helm of the Sydney Kings in Australia’s NBL, narrowly missing the playoffs in a competitive campaign before returning to the U.S. to scout and assist with Team USA.
Known for his talent development skills, Abdelfattah has previously worked with a range of rising prospects, including Joan Beringer, Rocco Zikarsky, Tristen Newton, and Enrique Freeman—a clear fit for the Timberwolves’ vision of strengthening the bridge between their G League and NBA squads.
