A towering plume of ash now looms over St Vincent as Seismic Research Centre (SRC) scientists today (April 22) confirmed the new explosive event at La Soufrière.
According to the SRC, the eruption took place at 11:03 am local time, and the ash cloud has been propelled eight kilometres into the Vincentian sky.
“The view from the [Belmont] observatory at 11:08 am this morning. Explosions can happen without warning during the ongoing eruption. It has now risen to above 8km into the atmosphere. Most of the material seems to be going out towards the sea,” the volcanic unit said via Facebook.
It is the 31st eruption recorded by the SRC since La Soufrière first burst into its explosive phase on April 9.
April 18 was the last explosive event recorded by the SRC.
Both the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) SRC and the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) are monitoring the ongoing eruption.
