As businesses prepare for the implementation of the Data Protection Act come December 1, the minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for skills and digital transformation, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, says it will done on a phased basis to allow for more time to prepare.
“As many of you will recall the Data Protection Act comes into effect on December 1, 2023, a lot of our companies have worked really hard to get ready for December 1 and a lot of our government entities have been working really hard to get ready for December 1… but there are many that are struggling a bit in that regard. We have had consultations with the private sector and I thank the private sector for their openness and open dialogue on where the challenges are and they have indicated that some of their members and some of the sector leaders are not ready as yet for the full implementation,” she said.
Senator Dana Morris Dixon was speaking at a post-Cabinet press conference on Wednesday, October 24.
The minister noted that registration will commence on December 1, however, the regimes in relation to sanctions will be phased in.
Morris Dixon says more information on the phased implementation of the legislation will be provided in the coming weeks.
The Data Protection Act provides guidelines on how customers’ information should be handled in physical and electronic form.
