China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) is one of the world ’s leading construction companies, demonstrating its prowess and abilities with engineering projects all over the world.

The company has been instrumental in building modern highways across Jamaica that has connected the country and will help to spur economic growth and facilitate better transportation.

One can now get from Kingston to Montego Bay in less than three hours, unthinkable 15 years ago!

The Government of Jamaica recently opened the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of the south coast highway, where CHEC played an instrumental role in its design and build.

Below, Huazhong Jiang, deputy general manager of CHEC (Americas), talks about the project and what it means for Jamaica:

Huazhong Jiang, deputy general manager of CHEC (Americas)

Honourable Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mr. Andrew Holness, representatives from the member of parliament, Cabinet ministers, councillors, representatives from the Chinese Embassy, representatives from the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Managing Director of NROCC Mr. Stephen Edwards, my colleagues from CHEC and specially invited guests, Good Morning.

Today, we gather to celebrate the opening of the Southern Coastal Improvement Highway Part A, a momentous occasion for Jamaica’s infrastructure development. I represent China Harbour Engineering Jamaica Limited (CHEC), and it’s an honour to share in the joy of contributing to Jamaica’s progress.

The Southern Coastal Improvement Highway Part A, connecting May Pen to Mandeville, symbolizes collaboration and determination. CHEC’s role in this achievement reflects our commitment to Jamaica’s sustainable development through enhanced transportation infrastructure.

Infrastructure is crucial for economic growth and social development. Our vision was clear when we embarked on this journey: to support Jamaica’s progress. Today, as we see this 28- kilometer road completed, we’re proud of the life-changing improvements it will bring to the people on the South Coast of the island.

This highway promises improved connectivity, reduced travel times, and enhanced safety. It will stimulate economic growth, foster trade, and create new opportunities in the region.

We’ve worked diligently to minimise our environmental impact, protect natural habitats, and preserve the ecological balance. Thanks to the NROCC team, crucial in logistical planning, and the Jamaican community for their usual warm welcome.

We’re committed to contributing to Jamaica’s ongoing development. We’re actively exploring more investments and opportunities to align with Jamaica’s vision as the preferred place to live, work, raise families, and conduct business.

In conclusion, we’re thankful to all involved in this project. Together, we’ve achieved something remarkable, and the Southern Coastal Improvement Highway will be a catalyst for Jamaica’s progress and prosperity in the years to come. Thank you.
