Nintendo has finally unveiled the official poster for the upcoming Mario movie. The film, which is being produced by animation company Illumination in partnership with gaming company Nintendo, was originally announced in 2018 but not until September of last year did the public learn about the cast.
The poster shows what appears to be the game world’s Mushroom Kingdom in Illumination’s iconic animation style (similar to the Despicable Me franchise) and features many hidden easter eggs that fans of the franchise would appreciate.
Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt will voice the titular character, Mario, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day will be playing Mario’s brother, Luigi. Peaky Blinders’ Anya Taylor Joy voices Princess Peach, Jack Black will be the villainous Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.
Nintendo has announced a Nintendo Direct (a series of online presentations or live shows produced by Nintendo where information regarding the company’s upcoming content or franchises is presented) on Thursday (October 6) to reveal the first trailer for the movie.
Nintendo has made clear that no gaming news will be appearing in the presentation.
The film is set for release in April 2023.
Mario is the mascot for Nintendo and has existed since 1985. Many fans of the franchise have expressed concerns over the film due to the failures of the previous two attempts at creating a Mario film in 1986 and 1993. Questions have been raised about the use of Pratt’s American voice for an Italian character and concerns about options for a story that remains faithful to the source material.
